Burford and "The Ruins"

It has been a lovely relaxing Saturday. About one in the afternoon, SK said, "Let's go see the Ruins!" This is something we had never heard of until two days ago, when our young Oxford Elders said they had been to see them earlier in the week. They showed us a couple of pictures, told us a little bit about them and we knew we had to see what these ruins were all about.

We haven't had many days recently when we could just take off with abandon, with no worries about when to be back. This day was perfect.

We left the flat soon thereafter, and immediately got caught up in heavy traffic. It took us about twenty-five minutes to get out of town (normally ten minutes) and then we were on the open road. The Ruins as they are called were only about a half hour away, through some gorgeous country. The picturesque little village of Burford is a few minutes beyond that. As is typical, we found ourselves on narrow country lanes, lined in lush green foliage. We arrived at Minster-Lovell Ruins in good time. It was built in the 1430's - earlier than Columbus! We parked with a few other cars in a small clearing, ambled down a long pathway into an old churchyard/cemetery and past to some serious ruins. Here is a lovely article about it:

It was a beautiful drive and breathtakingly beautiful on all counts.

It got up to seventy degrees today, along with rain. It will reach seventy-five on Wednesday. Coming back into town, we saw a lot of bare legs (up to the impossible as SK says) and a lot of cleavage. Fifty years ago, no one would have dared appear in public the way we see people dressed here. We saw one young woman walking along the streets of Oxford with jacket draped back down to her waist, and only a bra on top and shorts. It didn't even look like a swim suit top.  It looked like a bra. And looking around, it didn't appear that anyone noticed or cared.

We tuned into our mission call this evening. Dave and Deb were at a Saturday night session of Stake Conference somewhere in the mission.  They have only four more Saturday night Zoom meetings after this. It is flying by.

I can't believe those ruins aren't cordoned off! People can just walk all around them.
