Food and Friends - Necessities of Life
I am excited about this. I don't know if it will come to pass. But this is the proposal that I will present to our two YSA Reps and our Bishop's and his wife.
I have written down a possible ten different dinner menus. Simple meals, but something that might appeal to a young adult. We will plan on preparing meals Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. There will be an online signup and up to four can sign up to come any of those days. We will serve a meal and then have a 15 minute devotional.
I think that sounds marvelous. Since the 10 meals are things that I have fixed forever, it will not be difficult to do. For instance spaghetti.....I plan on making two large pots of the sauce next week, and I will freeze most of it. We will stock up on ice cream as a go-to dessert. Nothing like Melissa's ice cream, but once in awhile I will make cookies, cake or pie to go with it.
The Bishop's wife asked us to go get food from the church. They have a ton there...left by large families who fled to Utah in March. She has asked the ward members to come and take what they want. We walked in and - well I should have taken a picture. We picked up about 30 cans of various kinds of beans, 7 super large cans of tomatoes, rice, lentils, some soup, some tomate passate (Lia says its far better than tomato sauce) and various other things.
That will save money and shopping time....I'll use it for spaghetti, enchiladas, taco pile-ups, chili...etc.
By the way, here is our ward building with an interesting story. Several years ago, the Church approached the powers that be in Oxford asking if we could build a church on this lot of land. They were told that churches are going empty and Oxford doesn't need another abandoned church. So they were instructed to erect something that looks like an office building, so that when membership drops off, it can be easily converted. Obviously, they are unfamiliar with LDS Churches and their usage.
I've been going through closets and cupboards making room for all the new canned items, and ended up going with SK to a recycling center to get rid of some old things left here by other senior couples years and years ago. There was an old printer that must have been 8 years old. There is a fine printer on the desk that works beautifully. It's nice to clear up some space.
We tuned into the zoom conference call this evening. One of the other senior couples made the announcement that each missionary is supposed to have a bag containing a two-week supply of food - just in case they have to go into a strict lockdown again. They instituted that six months ago, but in the interim, some missionaries must have eaten theirs.
So they are encouraged to replenish their supplies. I told all the young missionaries to pick up some of the food in the church. Hopefully they will do it.
