Why I Believe

It's time for the "Why I Believe" Fireside which rolls around monthly.  It comes on the first Sunday on the month, but of course in April and October, everyone is enjoying General Conference.  So here we are already coming up on the 2nd Sunday.  It looks like it will be excellent.  Our young tech elders are getting more and more sophisticated with the wonders of filming and broadcasting.  The link is:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo_S8xCIn30

If you count doing laundry, cleaning bathrooms and kitchen cupboards a good day, then it has been a good day.  Actually I count those things as good to have done.  SK and I are adding a conference talk to our daily study.  We are reading the Four Gospels together and Jesus the Christ. Lately, we have been discussing the reading assignment more and by the time we finish with a twenty-minute talk, we have spent a fair amount of time.  I can't think of too many more productive ways to spend our time while we are still in a state of lockdown.

I didn't walk today.  In the afternoon, Francis texted to see if he could come by at 6 to return a pan and a kitchen utensil.  I said yes, and knowing that he has been putting in long days asked him if he would like to join us for dinner.  He happily accepted.  I know what you are thinking.

It is basically against the rules, but we are feeling safer and safer and occasionally take these risks.  I made a desert, which took a little more time than I had anticipated, and so ran out of time for a walk.  I probably would have been better served foregoing the desert and taking the walk!  We are both feeling pudgy these days, and rightfully so.  We have been eating a lot.

Francis, the young man who came to dinner is from Togo.  He has a lovely French accent that SK has a difficult time understanding.  Nevertheless, they chatted amiably for an hour or more while I cooked, cleaned and talked on the telephone.  They sounded like bosom buddies.  And I think Francis thoroughly enjoyed SK.

It was lovely to sit at the table and talk.  He has been inside his flat for the last week, bent over his computer, trying to get all his i's dotted and t's crossed.  Literally.... he was sent back to the editing table with his thesis to fix all the typos.  He is within a month of the coveted PhD in math, studying with the foremost math professor in the world.

He is on the home stretch and he is tired and stressed.  I think this evening was good for him.  SK gave him the shorter version of the last 53 years of our lives.  Several times Francis threw back his head and laughed with utter joy.  Of course, that spurred SK on to share even more!

We received two assignments from the mission for Friday.  One was from Deb, and one from the office Elder in charge of transportation.  Seventeen new missionaries will come in on Friday....making it 70 new missionaries.  I think those poor senior missionaries in the office are going berserk.  Housing, companionships and transportation are a nightmare.  The two assignments were in direct conflict with each other.  We bandied it about for a few minutes and I finally called Deb.

We have only one assignment now....which is good, because we couldn't possibly have been in two places at once.

The rest of the week is going to be busy.  I think I had better go to bed.....just thinking about it makes me tired.

Our assignment will have to do with the "Why I Believe" Devotional on Sunday evening.  I'll tell you more about it on Friday and Saturday.
