Rethinking
We listened to the Prime Minister this afternoon. He gave a brief speech about the virus and the stringent measures the government is taking, and turned it over to a scientist and a physician to answer any other questions. It was informative. They say that one in fifty now has the virus, but if I read it correctly, I thought I read something yesterday that said one in thirteen has it in Arizona.
I think I could spend a whole lot of time reading the news. That, combined with the book about the Spanish Flu is quite riveting. It is easy to be alarmed about the state of things, but it is also easy to allay fears by looking not at the death rate, but the survival rate. The vast majority who get COVID-19 survive, many with hardly a symptom. We are hoping that if we come down with it, that we will be among those who have a mild case.
We delivered some goodies to a young lady who was baptized last year and who hasn't been able to attend much - when church has been held in person - and really has felt isolated from the church when it is all online. I told her we would be by around two. She was dressed as though she was going to Sacrament Meeting. I asked if she was going out and she said no. I don't know if she got dressed up for us, but I was touched. SK stayed in the car and I got out and talked to her for a little while (with my mask on and staying easily six feet from her - outside).
I think that may be our last foray out in the world for awhile. I have put in an order for groceries this week. We will pick it up Thursday night at 9. That was the only opening, and if I had asked for delivery, it would have been sometime next week. We just can't take any more chances, so from now on, everything we can do from home and online will be done that way. We will still walk outside for exercise when the weather permits.
The day was a little on the somber side, until the mail came. A package from my brother Dan arrived. It was chocolate!!!! He sent Cavenaugh's Chocolates from Bountiful Utah. Every time we buy chocolate from anywhere, we compare it to Cavenaugh's. They couldn't have come at a better time.....they really lifted our spirits! I hate to have anyone pay the soaring costs of shipping even a little thing to us, but that was so fun today.
On the mission call tonight, it was announced that one in thirty in London has the virus. We were also told that for the first time in our mission, a missionary has COVID. She was hospitalized and is now stable. One of our sweet young women from Brazil.
I called a 95-year-old ward member who has been widowed for 40 years. She has been indoors since March, bless her heart. She is lonely, but she is doing well. She was delightful to visit with. Her mind is sharp and she was full of gratitude and love for the Savior.
We just need to cultivate that same attitude. While we are inside our flat. Until Mid-February or later.
