Family Blessings
January 2....the four-month anniversary of our return to England, and the 132nd birthday of my Grandmother Checketts. I was thirteen when she passed away, and I loved her. We seldom spent time with her, so I didn't know her well, but I loved her.

We spoke with a marvelous young man today. He sounded so nice. He is from Ghana, and here to get a masters at Oxford in an area of politics. I will be interested to have some time to visit with him. He is cold (Ghana must be very tropical) and he is lonely. He lives alone in student housing not far from here. He has been here a week or so. We talked for a few minutes and I told him about the program here. I certainly hope it will not be long before we can get together.
Dave and Deb drove up from London with Lily, their daughter and her husband Ashton and their cute little boy George. George is almost a year, and he has four little teeth and he is tottering around on two chubby little feet. We all walked around Oxford and just took in the beauty of the city. We wore masks. We walked 3 1/2 miles. Oxford is such a beautiful city, even on cold dark days.

They came up to the flat (an absolute no no - so keep it under your hat) and we ordered in dinner. It was so incredibly lovely to sit together and talk and watch that adorable baby careen around. After dinner they said their good-byes and were off to London.
Oh my. I feel so sorry for lonely people. Loneliness is a terrible thing. And to be here far away from family and all that is familiar would be so very difficult.
