Last Sabbath of 2020

The last Sabbath of 2020, we had a nice leisurely day, a portent of things to come no doubt.  We had our own Sacrament service, watched the ward Sacrament Meeting and participated in the young missionaries regular half-hour inspirational service for the people they are teaching.  It was all good.

It is 34 degrees outside with a 50% chance of snow by morning.  We'll believe it when it happens!  But I do love the cold weather.

SK has been blessing the Sacrament for us now for nearly 9 months - give or take a very few Sundays when we shared our meetings with the LeSueurs (We lived in their basement for 5 1/2 months) and the two meetings we attended here in Oxford.  He still gets emotional when he blesses it.  It is always a sweet experience.

Our young sisters dropped by bearing gifts.  I was in the kitchen assembling cream puffs for them....we were going to walk over to their place with the puffs, but they beat us to it.  When anyone comes to see us, they ring our bell, and we go down the two flights of steps and outside to talk to them.  Actually, we shouldn't both go down, because the rules are you can only meet one person outside, even if you are socially distancing yourself.

But nevertheless, we spent a few minutes standing in the cold - just talking.  They were cute.  They had been out walking delivering things to a few others.  They left us with some home-baked cookies, a little Christmas ornament and each had written a note to us.  They made our day!

I am unsure why, but the young missionaries, the ward members and the young adults seem to feel a sense of stability just having us here in the community.  They have expressed it over and over, and it is very touching - in the face of being able to do so little.

David called and we talked for awhile.  David is 11, and has no second thoughts about calling any time day or night....and I love it!  He just takes it for granted that I can and will answer and we will chat.  I am grateful that he feels that way, because if anyone in the family calls, no matter what time of day, I am so very happy to answer and hear the latest.

When Lia and Ed called on Christmas morning, I was so grateful to see and hear them.  And to hear the details of their Christmas Eve.  I love visiting by phone or Facetime - even for the most mundane of reports.

I'm sitting here by the glow of the Christmas tree - again.  It is so nice to sit on the couch in the living room where it is warm with the soft glimmer of all the sparkling little ornaments casting a magical spell on this space and its little nissemen. (gnomes)

I'll probably pack it all away on New Year's Day.  At that point, I am ready to move on.  But for now, I'll enjoy this while I can.
