The British Way
The good news is that I haven't had a headache since tossing out the lilies, and I will make sure that I never have a close encounter with another one. That is cause to celebrate.
It has been another day of twilight. The sun never managed to put in much of an appearance. We didn't go for a walk until three, and the entire walk felt like the sun would settle beneath the horizon any moment. We agreed that we would go for 20 minutes, since that is the minimum for good health and we do want to be healthy
We found our way to another stretch of the Thames River, and instead of looping back, we ended up going out of our way to find a bridge to get us back. We were never lost. We knew exactly where we were, but we were not too keen on swimming across the river in 50 degree weather.
It turned out to be a lovely 3-mile walk, and for a bonus, as we were walking home - we met one of our young women! We stood and chatted for awhile...it felt good, and I think she was happy to have someone to visit with. She is a newlywed and they are a marvelous couple, but both are heavily into their studies and they are both home a good deal of the day. And well....that can get old, even for a just-married duo.
We returned home where SK took up his post at indexing, or more to the point, reviewing. He is very diligent about it and spends a fair amount of time doing that every day.
I got back to the computer. For two days now I have been trying to convert American recipes into British recipes for Veer, our sweet young friend who was baptized about a year ago. Others have asked for the recipes, and I am happy to share them (I get them mostly from Erin, Melissa and Lia), but Veer is just 19 and never been away from home til this year. She has never needed to cook and so is now learning the hard way.
She called last week for my chocolate chip cookie recipe (I stole that one from the back of the Nestle's Chocolate Chip package). I think it is a great recipe to start with. So she has made those cookies and brownies and is happy with the results.
You wouldn't think it would be so difficult to convert....but it is. I have a few charts which I printed up, but often I just end up googling "How many grams in 4 ounces of chocolate?" Every food is different. A cup of sugar in America is different than a cup in England, a half pound macaroni is different here in measurement than a half pound of beef.
It is well worth it though. She is so excited to be making treats for her friends. At this point, if we can each find meaningful ways to serve others, that is a good thing....and did you notice both things she made were chocolate? That is a very good thing!
