Trivia

We are never quite sure when we will have a day like today, but it was a "take care of little things" day.  I got out the apartment collection of sewing tools, collected by senior missionaries and abandoned here to the official "sewing kit" today and mended a couple of items.  I played around with an odd little sewing machine for awhile to see if it will do the job I need it to do on the fitted sheet for our bed.  The elastic snapped, and I am going to rethread more elastic through.  I am happy to say that it does indeed work - even though the directions in English are woeful.  It is about the size of a very small stapler.

I did several loads of laundry.  I got my hair cut....a full two months past the time I would ordinarily get it cut.  Before that I went 5 months without a haircut.  Think of the money I am saving!!!

It was an adventure.  I would have been happy to walk because it has been raining all day, and it is about a mile away - perfect on both counts.  But in reading the instructions for being at the salon, I found that I was not to bring anything with me - like an umbrella, a book or a bottle of water - even a large purse.  It was suggested that if I wore a coat, I would have to hold it on my lap while my hair was being done.

Since the temperature was 52, and since it was raining rather steadily, SK drove me there, and even then I wore a light-weight rain coat.  We got there 10 minutes early, and I had to stand outside the door until my stylist came to get me.  Everywhere you go now, you have to scan the code on the door onto your phone.  That is so that you can be traced should you be a carrier or have been exposed.

I got inside and took off my dripping jacket and folded it on my lap.  My stylist...a lovely person who was raised in Surprise Arizona and who has spent a good deal of her adult like here was wearing a large mask, a large clear plastic visor and a plastic apron and gloves welcomed me warmly.  Neither of us were sure for a minute or two if we knew the other since we were both kind of covered up!

She did a great job on my hair....I wish she would eventually move back to Arizona.  But when she was done, I ran outside to get in the car, and it kind of curled up unattractively instead of looking smooth and sleek.  Oh well, I am not going to worry about it.  Besides, who will see it?  Our sweet YSAs don't care too much about my gray hair or matronly body.  I think the next time we see them will be tomorrow night when we will gather at the church at 5 p.m. to watch the first session of conference together.

Grace, a young woman who was baptized last December was going to come with the young elders for a lesson here today but canceled, so they will come next week one day.  Her family is from Ghana, and our new elder is from Ghana.  That is a tender mercy.  The elders may end up teaching the entire family.  We need more families, since they are the strength of the wards.

We participated in the mission conference zoom call tonight.  It was great fun.  They played clips from all 15 of our living prophets and first companionship to call in won a prize.  Some prizes were fun masks and most were pizzas delivered to their doors.  SK and I didn't call in, but we could have been first on every call.  We knew them all!

It will be raining tomorrow too....for the next several days also.  We may float away here if the Thames begins to rise!  But we will fall asleep to the steady rhythm of the rain.
