Ladies and Gentlemen....Derek and Company Have Arrived!
I spent a lot of the day cooking for Monday. SK spent a great deal of the day doing the shopping. He is way more comfortable doing that than trying to help in the kitchen, and frankly, I like being in that tiny kitchen alone to listen to podcasts etc. Erin keeps me in good supply of good listening.
Derek, Heather, Brooke, Clint, Ally, Kimball and Andersen arrived this evening. We have been excitedly anticipating their visit for months. They drove to Los Angeles yesterday and boarded a plane at 9:30 p.m., flew through the night and lost 7 hours. The got into Heathrow Airport at 3:30 p.m. and then took a bus to Oxford, arriving here at 6:30 p.m. They all looked great.
I don't know how any of them feel but they are taking it all in stride.
We brought them home to our flat where they changed and then we went to a pub for fish and chips. But alas and alack, pubs don't admit anyone under 18 on a Saturday night! So we wandered down High Street and stopped at a food truck. For five pounds each we had a fantastic meal and everyone was pleased and full.
We visited for awhile here before everyone kind of hit the wall. SK walked them over to their AirB and B, which was just a couple of blocks away. After a series of mishaps obtaining the key, they gained entrance and are very pleased with the two-bedroom flat.
In the mission wide conference call this evening, President Checketts told about the church-wide cautions being taken with the coronavirus. He said that thus far, England is not having a huge problem with it but every possible precaution is being taken. They repeated all of the things we must do to protect ourselves, including NO handshaking, NO hugging, and staying at least 3 feet away from everyone when possible. Try not to hold rails or touch anything in public transportation, and if you do, use hand-sanitizer and wash your hands thoroughly as soon as possible. And don't touch your face!!!!! He said they are most concerned for their senior missionaries, and if there were a real outbreak, they would probably send all the seniors home.
So our YSAs, and people in the workforce are praying that they don't get it because they can't afford to be self-isolating for 2 weeks.....no one can afford to just drop out of work and school for that long. On the other hand, I would hate to be sent home. But getting a bad case of coronavirus doesn't sound appealing at all either.
We will trust that it will all be handled properly, and in the meantime, we will stock up as much as we can, just in case.
Tomorrow will come early so I'm off to sleep!
