Grand Adventures

I was up early enough to bake some "Death by Chocolate" cupcakes and organize everything for lunch with the young missionaries.  Fortunately, Monday's night's well-attended dinner of chili/hot dogs left us with enough chili to feed the missionaries lunch today.  I still had vegetables left for a green salad, and I figured who would mind left-overs if there was chocolate at the end of the meal?

I worked on that until they came at 10:30, and then I sat down with them to participate in the meeting.  SK walked to the store to get fresh bread, which is always a good idea with young people.  If you run out of everything else, they are always happy with bread, butter and jam.

We had a good meeting, and afterward we all sat together at the table and ate lunch.  They are cute young people, and I always get more a sense of their youth when the meeting is over and they are sitting together over a meal.  They are good young people.

After they left, I needed to return a tabletop griddle to Amazon.  I got it a few months ago, but have only used it a couple of times.  It seemed like such a brilliant idea at the time....actually it is still a brilliant idea.  For frying up grilled cheese sandwiches, or grilling hot dogs like I did on Monday night, they are perfect.

However, both times I used it, I got halfway into the meal and it just turned itself off.  No amount of coaxing would get it to come back on.  It left me with soggy grilled cheese sandwiches the first time, and 24 nearly-done hot dogs Monday.  I wrote to the company pleading for advice on what to do about it and they graciously offered to see if they could replace it, refund the money or fix it.....any of which is acceptable.  They even sent a postage-paid label.

All we had to do was put it back in the box, affix the label and drop it off at an approved package drop.

We consulted the map.....almost exactly 1 mile away, which in my book is a perfect walk.  It was made even better by the fact that it was raining, something which was lost on SK.  But he donned his coat, retrieved the umbrella from the car, and carried the griddle, and we were off.

I loved doing that!  We went through a couple of charming neighborhoods, past a few cafes and restaurants, shops and other businesses of Jericho/Oxford.  By the time we got home, we had enough time to study a little, tidy a little, and get ready for this evening's Institute class.

We only had three YSAs here for the lesson.  It was a superb lesson, and with so few, there was a lot of discussion.  I love listening to them.  They know the scriptures and they think about things deeply.

Four of our YSAs are in Sweden today and the rest of the week, driving up north to see the Northern Lights.  I think it is amazing and so nice that so many of these college kids are doing things like that.  Certainly once they get married and settled in with life, that just won't be possible for a few years.  Then they get into their seventies and not only do they NOT have the energy, but they aren't quite as inclined to such high adventure.

I told SK today that it is a little discouraging that on the days we don't have too much to do, we are so tired from the days when we DO have a lot to do, that we just want to rest!!!!  Meanwhile so much of historic and beautiful England lies at our doorstep.

As yet, I am not discouraged.  We will get to it.  Little by little, we will see this great land.  Tomorrow, we will see three cities - again - as we inspect apartments.  Who knows, there may be an hour in there to detour to a historic site!

In the meantime, I think I find as much joy in walking through Oxford as our young friends do in seeing the Northern Lights.  In my mind, this is all a grand adventure.
