What's Not to Love About This Day?
If I had been writing a blog when I was growing up in Bountiful Utah, you would have been greatly amused by my Sunday posts. I sometimes reminisce with my siblings about some of the entertaining and quirky goings on in the ward we grew up in. There were several older people who gave us no end of delight. There was one sister who was probably younger than I am now, who regaled us with her travel stories every fast Sunday. Another older gentleman was hard of hearing, and bore a striking resemblance to Mr. Magoo.
But there were younger people as well, whose behavior was just odd.
I must say, both the ward in Gilbert and the wards here have no entertainment value like the old days. And it is wonderful. Every meeting is a spiritual feast and by the time we get home on Sundays, we have been richly fed.
So as each Sunday evening rolls around, I wonder if you are getting tired of hearing about how beautiful the day has been.
After Sacrament meeting today, 4 of our YSAs asked if they could come and watch an old movie with us. We were more than happy to oblige....we adore those kids. "Uni" - as they call it starts up in earnest again tomorrow and all will be heavily stressed now for several weeks. This is a grand way to relax before the storm.
We all sat together munching popcorn and watching PillowTalk. My idea of an old movie is a Charlie Chaplin movie....but Pillow Talk with Doris Day and Rock Hudson is an antique to them. I've always enjoyed that movie, but I saw it through new eyes today....23-year-old eyes. One young woman, who is a very thoughtful feminist, thought the Rock Hudson character was a real creep....jumping from one relationship to another, wooing and bedding as he went on his merry way. And then, when he fell in love with Doris Day's character, we are to believe that he was 100% faithful forever.
A young man thought that Doris Day playing the part of a stunningly beautiful and irresistible woman was difficult to swallow. He saw nothing about her to be recommended. So interesting!!
We went to dinner at the home of a family in the ward. They often invite the YSAs over, and they are much beloved by all of the young people. He is a professor at Oxford, and has taught I think at Harvard and BYU. They have a cute family, and they are absolutely wonderful people. So we went, along with many of the YSAs.
We had a wonderful Cafe Rio type meal (that kind of put a wrench in my plans to serve chicken quesadillas tomorrow night). I guess I'll fall back on Plan B - Macaroni and Cheese. That's OK, they have all said that it is their favorite of the meals we have fixed.
As we walked out of their home, even with my heavy sweater over a blouse and skirt and a coat, it was COLD! There was ice on all the cars, trees, sidewalks etc. I was glad that we had driven. The temperature registered 27 degrees!
I love it.
