Having a Ball
The weather forecast says it won't rain again until next week. Isn't that amazing? I have been enjoying the rain immensely, and especially being outside in it. We have a pretty good umbrella that works well - if I hold it - at keeping us both mostly out of the rain. And there is something so very charming about huddling close together under that little canopy and listening to the rain pelt away at us.
We walked arm in arm tonight to the Ball. Forget the Ball Gown and glass slippers, not only did my fairy godmother NOT appear to tap me with her magic wand and make me a princess, she also did not provide a carriage and white horses. But I didn't mind. I walked to the Ball through the city center with my Prince and it was delightful.
I felt a bit like Jane Eyre, who put on her best gray dress for important occasions. I put on my best black outfit, my sensible walking shoes and pearls, and away we went!
The Ball was attended by 700 YSAs and there must have been 50 others overseeing it - like us. We didn't do much, except sort of man the "Speed Dating" room. We had 20 chairs set up at tables, and we kept inviting young people to come in and try it. I think most everyone had a good time.
It was held in the historic Oxford Town Hall. It had a ballroom and stately staircases leading up (and down), the kind you just know Cinderella left her slipper on. There were handsome young men strutting around in tuxes and gorgeous young women dressed in sequined garb. There were also self-conscious ones awkwardly standing in small groups, others who seemed terribly alone in that huge social gathering, and some who just looked like the entire experience was a little on the painful side.
I can remember such occasions, filled with excitement and anticipation. The scintillating idea of maybe meeting someone who would be very special to you, the amazing idea that someone might be attracted to you, and you to him. The music, the atmosphere, the glamour, all such a thrilling and at the same time almost terrifying experience.
But I am so glad to be comfortably settled with my special someone.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Ball....so very much enjoyed seeing the young single adults that we have already come to think of as ours. They all seemed happy, and they all looked so nice. It made me happy. SK was enjoying it too. We also spent some time getting to know another couple from one of the wards we serve in, and that was a treat. Isn't it amazing how every person has a story? Every person is endlessly fascinating.
I love that so many people worked so hard to make this Ball something very special for all of the YSAs who attended. I was told that over 200 were on a waiting list, since 700 was the maximum number. I love this feeling among the bishops, stake presidents, and leaders that these young people are our most precious resource and that we must hold them close and nurture their faith in Christ.
And if that means throwing a Ball from time to time, sign me up!
