Looking Back, Looking Ahead

For two weeks, we have stayed close to Lia and her little daughters.  On Thursday, we had two appointments that we have been anticipating with pleasure.  We left North Salt Lake in the morning and met Teresa and Anna and their parents for lunch at the Lion House Restaurant near Temple Square.  It was cloudy and cool and we used an umbrella!  We walked huddled next to each other as the rain pelted the wonderful little canopy over our heads.  It was a short stroll from the parking lot underneath the Joseph Smith Memorial Building through the campus of Church office buildings and down to the entrance.  I vowed that we will get a very large umbrella for England....it is cozy to share, but much nicer if we can be comfortable and still protected!

We waited for them first on South Temple, then down the walkway and into the restaurant, drinking up the wonderful scents coming from the kitchen.  Soon they arrived, and they had their parents with them!  I hadn't met them before, but loved them immediately.  Their father is SK's age, while their mother is much younger by 20 years or so.  They both looked youthful, and their openness and enthusiasm made them seem even younger than they are.  I absolutely loved hearing them speak English.  There is something so dear to my heart about the soft danish accent.

We all got our trays and paraded past all of the delicious options for lunch.  I passed up a huge slice of chocolate cake!!!  Such will-power.  We got to the checkout and Teresa's mom was waiting to pay for all of the lunches.  It was so kind of them.  We spent 3 hours with them.  We never ran out of things to talk about.  Teresa and Anna are both doing well.  Teresa is working to become a teacher, and Anna is working for the Church in the translating department.

We finally parted so that they could attend a temple session, and I needed to get down to Orem where I had an appointment to get my hair cut....long overdue.  After being out in the rain and humidity, I definitely looked like I was in need of TLC.

After that we went into Provo to the home of Alan and Janice Heilner, who just returned from Oxford, where they served as Young Single Adult Missionaries....we will be replacing them.  They had fixed dinner for us.  We spent about 3 hours with them learning how their days and evenings were spent, what they did for the YSAs, what they cooked, what meetings they attended, some of the finer points of the flat, and various and sundry things about the mission itself.  It was most illuminating, and I was so grateful for that time.  They promised to come pick us up at the MTC for dinner again, and a continuation of our orientation to England.

It was a beautiful day.  Looking back at our time in Denmark and enjoying the company of two of our dear young adults and their parents was a sweet privilege.  Looking forward to serving in England was laced with excitement and gratitude that the Lord sees fit to use us once again as missionaries.
